All evidence points toward our Universe being through intelligent design or God. Atheistic Scientist have to ignore the fact that everything looks designed. So if we are uniquely designed and life does have a purpose than what about when we die?
Many believe in life after death it just how it looks is where they differ. For someone who believes in reincarnation they believe that you will have many opportunities for you to get better with each time you pass through this life until you reach a state of Nirvana. Some say we all go to Heaven no matter how you lived on this earth or what you believe.
The fact that we can make conscience choices not only shows our uniqueness as a creation compared to other created things but it also shows that we have a soul. Every culture that we have found through archeology or through the writings of history has believed in life after death.
Why has every culture believed in life after death without there being empirical evidence that it exist? People either ignore death as long as they can or they only think happy thoughts about it. Most people believe that their relatives are still somewhere whether that be heaven or still walking around this earth in some invisible form. Shows that communicate with the dead are popular as people try and find out how their relative is doing.
Before we talk about if there is life after death I think it is important to discuss that the Bible makes it clear that we are not supposed to contact the dead.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering,[a] anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer 11 or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, 12 for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.
The people they are talking to are not their relatives as we will see later, but they are demons who are still allowed to roam the earth until Christ returns.
Near Death Experiences
Have you ever noticed all near death experiences that are talked about are positive? That is not always the case.
“In the Edge of Death by Philip Swihart and Beyond Death’s Door by Maurice Rawlings there are accounts of those who tell terrifying stories of the life beyond. Some have seen a lake of fire or abysmal darkness, along with tormented persons- all of whom are awaiting judgment. There’s reports, the authors contend, are more accurate because they were gained through interviews almost immediately following near-death and resuscitation. These dark experiences, the writers say, are often lost to memory after a short period of time. (One Minute after you die, Erwin W. Lutzer, pg. 30)
We believe that you can see Christ right before you die but be careful
Acts 7:56 And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
2 Corinthians 12:1-4 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3 And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4 and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.
In Acts 14:19-20 Paul was stoned and presumed dead so if he was dead for a time this might had been what he experienced. Paul says that he experienced things that he could not explain. If you continue reading about Paul’s experience He brags more about his afflictions than his experience. This is contrary to much of the things we hear today about peoples experiences in heaven.
Although some people may be legit and they may have had an eternal experience, I will caution you to really check out their stories because they may not be telling the truth or had a vision that was not from God.
2 Corinthians 11:13-14 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
As Christians we believe in a spiritual world and it is something that is taught througout scripture.
Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
So why is there such a fascination with life after death?
1) God created you to believe in life after death
Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
This is why we sit at funerals and we think about where they are and what they are doing. If we believed we were really accidents than we should be programed to see a loved one who has passed and just walk away like a robot without emotions. If we really believed we were created as mistakes then death would not be a big deal to us.
Why would God create us that way?
Acts 17:24-31 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man,[c] 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for“‘In him we live and move and have our being’;[d]as even some of your own poets have said,“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’[e]29 Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
The God of all creation made us to be in a fellowship with Him so He created us to realize there is more than just this life. He created this inner search for meaning in us so that we can have that relationship with Him and enjoy Him forever. Is that not the ultimate love story? Is that not the ultimate live happily ever after ending?
God created to long after Him because He longs after us.
2) Our Universe points to life after death
Einstein concluded that we do not live in a 3 dimensional world but a 4 dimensional entity of space and time.
“Most physicists accept the notion that the vast majority of matter and energy in the universe is what they call “Dark Matter” and ‘Dark Energy”. It is matter and energy we can’t wee or detect. They arrive at that conclusion because galaxies are held together in clusters, but the gravitational force of ordinary matter simply isn’t strong enough to keep them together. So what keeps them from flying apart? They say it’s the gravitational force of “Dark Matter” – matter we cannot see. Scientists come to the same conclusion about “Dark Energy” They say this undetected energy force explains the increasing pace of the universe’s expansion. (The Unshakable Truth, Josh and Sean McDowell, pg. 418)
I thought Scientist believed that they base things on scientific proof? They are now saying that there is something out there that is holding this all together? They are now saying there is another energy out there that holds all of this together.
Physicist are now saying that 95% of matter is unseen and only 5% seen.
Our universe points to something greater than this place and this something is indescribable by scientist yet it is found to be the key ingredient that is keeping this whole universe together.
Hebrews 1:1-3 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high
We believe in this unseen world and now science and quantum mechanics shows that this world exists.
3) Jesus Points to life after death
Matthew 18:7-9 “Woe to the world for temptations to sin![a] For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! 8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell[b] of fire.
Matthew 19:28-30 Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world,[a] when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold[b] and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
Matthew 25:45-46 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
John 3:14-16 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world,[b] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:35-36 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
John 4:13-15 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.[a] The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
John 12:24-26 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
You may already believe that when we die that we go somewhere else and if you believe that then you have to decide who is right about eternal life. Is everyone else wrong and only Christianity correct?
For most people they busy themselves so much that they do not have time to think about eternity unless they get sick or someone close to them passes. With this life not guaranteed should we not start thinking about eternity and which religion is correct?
It all comes down to Jesus Christ and what you believe about Him. If Jesus is telling us the truth then He says there is only one way that you can get into Heaven.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus came to earth in the flesh and lived a life we could not live so that we can have eternal life. We do not have to wonder what Gods thoughts are on eternity He has made His thoughts clear. It is not a great unknown but a known for us to know and share with others.
4) The Bible points to life after death
Luke 16:19-31 shows us some information about life after death when Jesus told this parable. There are some key elements that we can look at to what Jesus says about eternity.
A) Two Destinies
Specific places and not some random floating experience. The destiny was of his choosing.
Hebrews 9:27-28 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
B) Full Consciences
The man had memories of his family, pain in his present and concern for those still on earth.
C) Destiny could not be changed
Purgatory is a popular teaching that people believe. The thought is over time the people in purgatory will eventually pay for their sins and be granted access into Heaven. The problem I have with this is if that were true than Christ died for nothing.
Matthew 25:40-42 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[a] you did it to me.’41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
D) The man did not think it was unfair to be there
First let me say that Christianity is not fair and I am glad. Christianity is about Christ paying the debt of sin we could not pay. Our society basis fairness compared to each other when we need to compare our lives to a Holy and perfect God. We do not get what we deserve through the work of Christ.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans says the wages of sin is death and we get to choose whose death. We can accept the death of Christ or we can accept eternal death by being sentenced for eternity away from God.
E) He was aware and concerned for his family and could not communicate with them.
He asked someone to be sent to his brothers.
Luke 16:27-31 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers[b]—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”
Sometimes no amount of evidence is good enough for some people.
If you were able to take a trip of a lifetime, whatever that looks like for you, you would spend a lot of time preparing, planning and even mapping out where you want to go. How much more should you investigate, plan and prepare for eternity?
The difference between Christianity and all other religions is simple; Christ did it all for you. (John 3:16-17) You have to accept the free gift that He offers because you can never earn it.
1 Corinthians 2:9 But, as it is written,“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—
