1) Know what you believe
Scribe: Refers to one who wrote
Every Disciple of Christ is to grow in their knowledge of the things of God. It is not just for preachers to study it is anyone who claims to be a follower of Christ. In Sports we make our students learn before they take the field but do we go over Christianity before they go on the Public School Campus? People reject Christ because His followers do not even know the basics of what they believe.
Head of Household brings out of his treasure
This expression of the head of the household is interesting because the thought is that it is one that provides for others just like a father provides for his family. As Christians we are to grow in our knowledge not just so we are smarter but so we can pass on what we know for the sake of those around us. We are to share the most precious treasure or pearl we have and that is the good news of what Christ did for us on the cross.
Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[b] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Brings Forth: Meaning a wide spreading of the treasure we have.
We need to teach our children and our students the word of God because that is the only thing that will change their lives. Some will say “I thought Jesus Changed Lives?”
Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Jesus is the Living word and the Bible is the written Word.
People will understand Christ when they are told about Him not through meditation, speculation, consensus, experience or philosophy. The reason so many people have misconceptions about Jesus Christ is that they have not been taught what God revealed in His word.
Churches overseas long for one thing and that is the word of God
We need to know what we believe and why because the world needs us to know it. I cannot help everyone through their hurts, pains and dysfunctions but I can pray for them and know what God says in His word which will bring more help than any advice I could offer.
We covered this when we discussed the 4 types of soils but it is something we have to constantly keep in mind. Jesus taught them and they were amazed at His teachings and His mighty works. People around us need to see our good works (Ephesians 2:8-10) but they also have to hear the truth.
2)Know people will reject Christianity for various reasons
Luke 4:16,20-22 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
They saw and heard Jesus and yet they began to make excuses to why He should not be the Messiah. This was more than likely the same synagogue that Jesus grew up in so the people there would have been familiar not only with the family but being a small town all the family gossip as well.Jesus had clearly proclaimed that He was the promised Messiah spoken of in Isaiah 61:1-2 in front of them and yet they could not believe because they knew Him.
A) The wrong view of God
Isn’t this the Carpenters Son?
Not only was Joseph known as a Carpenter which meant he would have worked with wood and stone but in this small town, sons did what their fathers did. So after Joseph passed away Jesus more than likely spent years building in that town. Jesus could have been a carpenter for about 21 Years interacting with the people of that town. These are the people that Jesus grew up with, worshiped with and played with. The sisters still lived in Nazareth and the people could not accept that He was now a great teacher or Miracle worker
The Jews knew that God Himself would come to the world and yet because He did not fit into how they thought He would come they rejected Him. People today have a lot of views about God that are false and if you try and show them another way they will not accept it.
John 10:37-38 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”
This is another time but Jesus was saying to them to look at the evidence and determine what is from God. As Christians that is all we are supposed to do for people is show them the evidence of how God has revealed Himself to this world.
Acts 17:2-4 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.” 4 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.
Our responsibility is to share the truth but you cannot make anyone, including family members accept the truth. We need to let them know about God so they can decide whether or not to accept Him.
B) The wrong view of themselves
And they took offense to Him
People are offended when you call what they do sin
Romans 6:16-18 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,[a] you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
It is a terrible thing when men take offense at the truth. Because they are offended there is no way you can even try to talk to them. I have had math teachers offend me and it did not keep me from learning that 2 plus 2 = 4 Many people want to have a relationship with God as long as you do not talk about sin. The problem is because of what God calls sin that keeps us from having a relationship with Him. Again if we view ourselves in light of other people we may or may not look that good but if we compare ourselves to God we look like the worse sinner that ever existed.
Matthew 13:13 This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
People that do not want to know the truth will never know because they will not be open to hearing it.
1 Corinthians 1:22-23 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24
People are offended when you say there is only one way to Heaven
In The 10 Most Common Objections to Christianity by Alex McFarland He says
80% of all people believe there’s more than one way to get to heaven.
91% of Catholics believe there’s more than one way to get to heaven
68% of Evangelicals Protestants say that a good person of a different religious faith will go to Heaven.
65% of Evangelical Teens say you cannot be sure which religion is right
Either Jesus is the Way or He was a liar and He did not leave any room for anything else. What makes the gospel good news is that there is bad news. What makes the gospel good news is that Christ paid the ultimate price for us so we did not have to pay for our sins ourselves.
God is love but He is also Just So God was caught in a dilemma, He could love no matter what and go against His character of Justice or He could just demonstrate Justice and show no love. God in His greatness fulfilled both love and justice by substituting Himself in the place of us.
Romans 3:23-26 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Galatians 2:21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness[a] were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
Jesus died for a reason and that reason is so that our sin could be dealt with and we could be back into a right relationship with God.
3) Know when to walk away
A Prophet is not accepted in his own town
When people are offended and cannot deny your truth they will attack you. The miracles were there and so was the great teaching but they would not accept it.
He did not do many miracles there
Matthew 7:6 Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.
It seems that it goes against Christianity to not keep pushing someone to believe what you believe but at some point you have to stop and allow them time to either think about it or for them to be convicted by the Holy Spirit or both. You shared the truth and now you have to allow God to work on them through His Holy Spirit. Some people that grew up in other religions may struggle to wrap their heads around what they are hearing.
“Jesus miracles were of spiritual benefit only as they led to faith in Him or strengthened those who already believed. For those who refused to believe, His miracles had no spiritual value at all, and He would not perform them in order to entertain or to satisfy ungodly curiosity.” (John MacArthur commentary on Matthew)
When you deal with people you have to understand that at some point no matter what is said or what proof you have it will not be enough to convince them. Some people will just not want to believe the evidence
