Matthew 22:41-46 Jesus God in the Flesh

Jesus had been repeatedly questioned and tested by the religious and political leaders to try and trap Him and prove to the crowd that He was not the long awaited Messiah.  The religious leaders believed that the Messiah would be from the line of David but would   not be God in the flesh coming to earth.  The Messiah they were looking for would have done some amazing things like Jesus was doing but would have also established an earthly Kingdom and freed them from the Roman rule they were under.

Verses  showing the Messiah would come from the line of David: Psalm 89; Amos 9:11; Micah 5:2; Ezekiel 37:21-25; Jeremiah 23:5-6; Isaiah 7:14

If Jesus was not from the line of David they could have quickly disproved Him as the Messiah because in the Temple before the destruction of it in A.D. 70 they kept detail records of everyone lineage. These religious leaders more than likely went and checked to see if Jesus lineage followed the line of David and so they never could question that aspect of who He was.

Son of David: A term they used referring to the Messiah

Matthew 9:27-31 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

The blind men were calling Jesus by His proper title as being the long awaited Messiah. Jesus never said to them that He was not the Messiah but also proved that He was through His mighty miracles. Everyone that used the term Son of David would have only used that in the sense of the one being the Messiah so the blind men knew exactly what they were saying and what they were calling Jesus.

If David calls Him Lord how is He his Son?

Jesus now ask them a question in front of the crowd. He uses the Bible as a reference knowing that they believed the passage Jesus quotes was a prophecy about the Messiah. But like many today they are not looking for truth but to make the Bible say what they want it to say to fit their own lifestyles and belief systems.

Psalm 110:1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool

To sit at my right hand was a term used for meaning you are coequal

Again, they believed that a Messiah would come but not God Himself. By Jesus showing them the error of their thinking He was proving to them that He was the long awaited Messiah. You could almost see the hope in Jesus eyes as He is explaining to them the errors they had, hoping they would see Him as God in the flesh and then turn and worship Him. Jesus had been publicly demonstrating that He was the Messiah for three years in the presence of many witnesses and miracles.

Make your enemies your footstool was a military term when the commander would literally place his foot upon the neck of his enemy showing that the enemy is defeated.

Some critics of the Bible say that this writing could not have been David because the eloquence and language of the passage. Of course Archeological and Historical records proved this passage to belong to David and therefore legitimizing that it was a prophecy that was fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

One of the most important questions you have to answer is who is Jesus Christ.

John 20:30-31 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  • They could not refute His Lineage
  • They could not refute His Miracles were from God
  • They could not refute His teaching
  • SO Jesus is showing them that the Messiah is God Himself in the Flesh which Jesus was claiming to be.
  • Paul says this in Romans

Romans 1:3-4 concerning his Son, who was descended from David[b] according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

One of the founding truths of Christianity is that Jesus was God Himself who came in the flesh to us.

And they were silenced and walked away

The Very people that could point out that Jesus met all the attributes of the Long awaited Messiah would not acknowledge that Jesus was right in His interpretation of the Bible.

What People Say about Jesus

1)      Myth: a Fictional character made up by lower class people according to Bertrand Russell

2)      Man: He did exist but He was a disturbed man who brainwashed people into believing He was God.

3)      Mystic: Jesus was a man but people made Him more than even He claimed to be. They says that He is a Non- Resurrected Jesus showing Him to be just another religious prophet or teacher.

4)      Misrepresented: Jesus was a ploy by the Church to control people. This is Non- Judgmental Jesus because the church is the one who put all these things in place to make people act a certain way.

5)      Messiah: Jesus was indeed God in the Flesh

The question them becomes why would God come to us? Why would God have to come in the flesh for mankind?

God came to us because we do not seek after Him.

Romans 3:10-11 None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God.

See Also Romans 1

Gods General revelation (His Creation) was not enough so He came Himself ( Romans 1). Instead of people looking at the created world and all of its wonders and then looking to God they worshiped the created things instead of the creator who made them.

God came in the form of Jesus Christ and made it so clear and evident that you have to ignore all the evidence just like the religious leaders to not believe that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. There is no more proof that God can give to people that would help them believe in Him than He has not already given.

C.S. Lewis said the term Lord, Liar or Lunatic  in his book Mere Christianity to say that Jesus did not leave any room for us to believe anything else about Him. So Jesus was either God in the flesh or a crazy man. We either believe Jesus was the Son of God or He was a liar. He cannot be a good teacher and also not be God because He called Himself God.

Jesus Claimed to be God

John 8:58-59 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Mark 14:61-64  But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.

The question is: “If Jesus never claimed to be God then why did they want to kill Him? “

This is important because if the critics say that Jesus never claimed to be God then they have to do something with those verses and the many others that showed He was claiming to be God. Again, a decision has to be made by each person about Jesus and it cannot be a neutral decision about Him because there is no room for that. He is either God or He is not.

Jesus claimed to be the only way to Heaven

Some believe that it is the general concept of what Jesus taught that is important and not if He was God or not. There is where COEXIST comes in and the belief that all roads lead to Heaven. If you are saying that Jesus is a good teacher than you have to accept that He made it where He was the only way to Heaven. If He is the only way to Heaven then there is no way that all roads lead to Heaven.

He came to live a perfect life so He could be the perfect sacrifice putting us back into a right relationship with God. 17)

Because Jesus lived a sinless life and died and rose again He says in the gospel of John;

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

There is more we can show you and prove to you about Jesus Christ if you need it but we all have to do something with Jesus Christ. He is either the way to God through His sacrifice or He is not.

The problem today is slightly different. It is not so much in our churches that members deny the deity of Christ as that they ignore it in their lives. One of the sad results of the denigration of theology in the popular church is the tendency to lower Jesus to the status of friend and companion rather than of cosmic  Lord and very God of very God.” (Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament)

So what will you do with Jesus Christ? Jesus proves in this passage to the religious leaders that God was to come in the flesh according to the prophecies foretold about Him. The evidence of Jesus Christ being God in the flesh is more than can be written here and has already been written. Some Atheist have come to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior after they studied the evidence of Christ and realized how much God has gone out of His way to show His love toward us.

God does not force us to love Him but He continues to leave notes and clues all around us, hoping we will fall in love with Him.
