Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Many people think that Grace over rides justice and they miss the point of the cross. When Jesus says that judgment is coming He provided a way so that we do not have to experience it but that does not mean that justice was not served. Instead Jesus took the punishment on Himself that we deserved so that justice could still be fulfilled but it was just applied to Him.
Even as they were rejecting Jesus and even though they were getting ready to kill Him, Jesus still cried out for the nation.
1) Not everyone looks at Christianity as Good news.
Therefore I send you prophets, and Wiseman and scribes
Sometimes I think we wonder how much longer God will continue to put up with our nation and how we have called what is wrong right and right wrong. He continues to show mercy by not demonstrating His wrath. A day will come, according to the Bible, when God will no longer tolerate sin.
These religious leaders had so much proof about who Christ was as they experienced Him personally with His teaching and His miracles. These were Bible believing religious leaders not Satanist or Atheist yet the ignored the very words that they studied.
Jesus was going to send them even more people their way to testify about Jesus. This shows the Grace and Mercy of God because even though they continue to reject Him He continues to send people to tell them the truth. If we are to love the Lord our God with all our Heart, Soul and Mind and our neighbors as ourselves, then we have to speak truth to them even when they do not listen. God may be sending you to people who will not listen.
Matthew 10:16 Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
You will Kill some, crucify others and flog others
Jesus prediction is not only about His own death but the death of His followers. Overseas right now people are dying for their faith as God is using them to share about Jesus Christ. In our country it will become increasingly unpopular to be a Christian and people are already trying to silence the spread of any religion by making it unpopular to even discuss it. You may have already heard that you do not discuss politics and religion but as Christians we are called to go and tell people about Jesus Christ.
I know many churches are trying to put a spin on Christianity so that people will like it more. They think if they change the atmosphere of their church or brand it the right way that people will see the real Jesus. Although many Christians have hurt Christianity by their actions many people reject Christianity because they do not want to accept Christ.
Although many Christians have tainted a true view of Christianity the story of Christianity is what pushes people away. You have to repent which means confess what you are doing is wrong. This means you call sin what God calls sin and you adjust your life accordingly through the power of His Holy Spirit which He promises to give you. Many people are about justifying their lifestyle or twisting Gods word so that certain things are not considered sin.
Don’t be surprised if you are hated for who you represent
2 Corinthians 2:15-16 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, 16 to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?
My wife had a car deodorizer that I hated. I would get in the car and she would think it was great and I hated it. It is the same thing with Christianity and some people will hate you because you remind them that in an of themselves they cannot earn their way to God. Many believe they are good enough and do not need to accept what Jesus Christ did on the cross for them.
The religious leaders hated Jesus because it messed up their system of power and their money making scheme in the temple along with their works mentality with God. Many people want Jesus as long as it is a Jesus of their making, not the Jesus who is going to tell them how to live. Christianity is about us dying to self and living for Him and for some people they would rather reject Him than be submissive to Him.
The result all the righteous blood poured out on the earth will be on you
Blood coming on you or on your hands is the Old Testament way of saying that you are guilty of the death of the individual. (See Jonah 1:14; Jeremiah 26:15 and Matthew 27:24)
Pilate will later wash his hands saying Jesus blood is on their hands. The people shouted to Pilate “His Blood be on us” (Matthew 27:25) In Acts 5:28 the religious leaders will arrest them and accuse them of trying to bring this man’s blood upon us forgetting that they are the ones who shouted that Jesus blood be on them.
Jesus is accusing them of doing exactly what they bragged about not doing and that is killing Gods messengers. They had all the proof they needed but ignored it. Our generation will stand before God with all the discoveries and proof that are here today. Scientific, archeological, Historical proof that is documented and ignored will be the judge of those who refused Jesus Christ. Many people just ignore the evidence because they do not want to accept it for what it is.
Jesus is letting them know that Your choices have fulfilled your destiny. They were not seeking to pour judgment on themselves but by their rejection of Christ that is exactly what they were going to get.
Righteous Abel to Zechariah
This would have encompassed the whole Old Testament prophets at the time. Cain could not stand that God accepted Abels sacrifice and not his. Cain wanted to do it his own way instead of Gods way and hated his brother for doing it Gods way.
This goes back to that everyone that stands for Righteousness gets persecuted.
All these things will come upon this generation
This generation will see the destruction of the temple in their lifetime something they would have never thought would have happened. In less than 40 years they would see the temple destroyed to the point of looking like it was never there.
2) Jesus felt sorrow for those who rejected Him
O Jerusalem, O Jerusalem
Jerusalem means city of peace but it had become a city of violence against Gods messengers and Gods people
To say a name twice was a sign of intimacy. So even though they were rejecting Him and about to kill Him and His messengers, He still loved them.
Luke 10:41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
Luke 22:31 Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you,[a] that he might sift you like wheat,
Acts 9:4 And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”
Wanted to gather you but you were unwilling
Jesus is using familiar language that King David would have used.
Psalm 36:7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Instead of running to the one where they could find peace with God they rejected the protection He provides as a mother bird protects her chicks. When a person turns from God it is not His fault but because of their own unwillingness
Some people reject Christ because of busyness some because of priorities and other in outright rejection.
Luke 19:41-42 And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
Peace to the Hebrews was peace with God not peace in life’s circumstances as we sometimes think. They were so set in their ways that they were blinded to the point of not being able to see at all. Many people think they are wise in their own eyes but they are really blinded by staying set in their own ways and rejecting Gods way.
If you have ever been with someone who thinks they are wise but are blinded it is very difficult to try and make a point that they could understand. Jesus equates it with trying to show a blind person the sunset. It is just impossible.
Your house is being left to you desolate
Jesus went from calling the Temple His Father’s House in Matthew 21:13 to now saying that it is your house meaning God’s spirit or Glory has left. This meant that Gods glory would depart from them and some believe that this meant as Jesus walked away so did God.
In 1 Samuel 4 there is a story of the ark of the covenant being taken from Israel and a woman naming her child Ichabod because Gods glory had left. The reference of being left desolate is total destruction as well as Gods spirit which the Temple would experience.
Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
As Christians we are promised Gods Spirit living inside of us and once we are Christians we are sealed in Him (Romans 8:16; 2 Corinthians 1:22) We are told to be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) which is our daily surrender of our lives to Him.
Although as Christians the Spirit of God will not leave us there will be a day when Gods Spirit will not be with man forever on earth. There will be a time when it will be too late to repent and turn to God and that will be a sad day for many.
For you will not see me until you say blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord
It was the saying that was said about the Messiah and Jesus is clearly saying it about Himself. This is another Messiah claim by Jesus as His departing words to those who were listening.
Matthew 21:9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
A few days earlier the religious leaders were telling Jesus to have the people stop shouting that statement in His triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Jesus was not the Messiah they wanted because they wanted a triumphant ruler not a messiah that would pay for their sins. They wanted Rome defeated something they thought they could not do because they thought by their own actions they could cover their sins.
Many believe this was Jesus rebuke to the nation as a whole that even though they did not believe now they will when He returns again. We do now from the book of Acts that many of them gave their lives to Christ because as Jesus promised His disciples did return to proclaim not only did Jesus die but He rose again.
Jesus did not come to change the world necessarily; He came to redeem us back to God. Yes being a follower of Christ does change the world as we follow Gods way but the real reason Christ came was for to be at peace with God through the forgiveness of our sins.
This statement is also like a chant at after a military victory. There are always two sets of people in the celebration of a military victory, the winners and the losers. When Christ returns the second time everyone will say blessed is He who comes either out of worship or because of defeat.
You have to know if you are going to be a follower of Christ not everyone is going to like what you stand for.
You will be a reminder to those who are perishing that they really do stink.
Our job is to not get tainted with anger toward those who reject Christ but to actually weep over them
