Matthew 24:15-28 Signs of the Times Part 3

Abomination of Desolation

I think we get content knowing that this will take place over in the Middle East but the reality is if we are here we will all be affected by this leader. This will be world domination and with the use of technology today we can easily see how someone can keep track of the majority of the world.

There will be worldwide persecution of Christians and Jews although the abomination will take place in Israel when the Anti- Christ goes into the Holies of Holies and declares himself God.

Abomination means gross ungodliness

The reason it is called the Abomination of desolation is because this gross ungodliness will cause the majority of the world to be laid to waste. That is what sin always does at it destroys Gods original design.

If you wonder why the majority of Christians stand so strong against certain sins it is not because they hate the individual but because they love them. They, along with God, see that a life of sin leads to a life of destruction. We know this with over eating and over drinking but when it comes to others sins, like staying pure till you are in a married relationship with the opposite sex, we somehow think that by standing up to those things is standing against love and that we have hate for the person.

God hates sin because sin destroys His creation.

Spoken by the prophet Daniel

Daniel 9:27 “‘Then for one seven, he will forge many and strong alliances, but halfway through the seven he will banish worship and prayers. At the place of worship, a desecrating obscenity will be set up and remain until finally the desecrator himself is decisively destroyed.’” (The Message)

The Anti- Christ will make a peace treaty with Israel and all the surrounding nations for seven years but break his promise after 3 ½ years and claim himself to be God.

Standing in the Holy Place

In Acts 21:28 it refers to the Temple as the Holy Place and this matches that description of Holy Place. Many scholars believe that the Temple will be rebuilt and the Anti Christ will then desecrate it when he steps in it and has people offer sacrifices to him.

Both Acts 21:28 and Psalm 24:3 refer to the Temple as the Holy Place

If nothing else it means Standing where He does not belong. The “He” is Masculine and so we know that the Aniti- Christ will be a Male.

He will be a World- Deceiver

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4  Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness[a] is revealed, the son of destruction,[b] who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

See also Revelation 13:1-5

A couple of facts about the Anti-Christ

1)      He will mesmerize the world with his words (Daniel 7:8; 11; Revelation 13:5)

2)      He will come as a peacemaker (Daniel 9:27; Revelation 17:11-12)

3)      He will establish a one world economy (Daniel 11:43; Revelation 13:16-17)

4)      He will rule the World (Revelation 6:2; 13:2)

5)      He will claim to be God (2 Thessalonians 2:4; Revelation 13:8)

6)      He will force people to be marked showing their allegiance to him (Revelation 13:16-18)

Let the Reader Understand

We have to always be discerning and looking out and reading the scriptures so we can discern what is happening. We need to constantly be in Gods Word and in prayer to understand what is taking place in our world as it pertains to the prophecies that God has already foretold.

The two things we seem to have the hardest time doing are reading Gods word and Prayer.

Understanding comes from Prayer and the reading of God’s Word

Read Matthew 24:16-18

Then those in Judea should flee

The Anti- Christ wrath will begin to be poured out and the Jews will suffer greatly.

To flee  means to be a fugitive. You are not fleeing for a moment but you will be a person on the run from the law until the tribulation is over.

Two Thirds of the Jews will be killed (Zechariah 13:8-9) and Many Christians will be Killed as well (Revelation 6:9-10; 13:7)

The mountains will provide some shelter but they will go with nothing but the clothes on their back.

The one on the Roof Top should not go down into his house; the one in the field should not turn back

The houses were built with flat rooftops and people would hang out there at night because it was cooler than the house. To go back into the house would cost you too much time according to Jesus.  If a person was working in the field they would take their outer cloak off and leave it at the other end of the field or in a store house at the vineyard. Jesus says do not go back and retrieve it because that little delay can cost you your life.

Similar to tragic stories like 9/11 where people did not make it out because they turned back to get their purses or other possessions so it will be for those who turn back to get something instead of just escaping.

Although this applied to the events of 70 AD when the temple was destroyed it also applies to a future event that will take place as well.

Read Matthew 24:19-20

Woe to those who are pregnant and who are nursing

The word woe in this sense is not judgment like Jesus used against the Pharisees but pity. It will be a sad day as these moms and dads are trying to get their families out only to be slowed down by their little ones which in turn will get them caught and killed.

And pray that your flight may not have to occur in winter or on the Sabbath

Although winters are not too terrible it does cause a few problems for those trying to run away. Food is not as abundant  and the Jordan river will be flooded making crossing it more difficult.

On the Sabbath can have several meanings. The Stores would all be closed and if you are a legalistic Jew then you would hesitate to run on the Sabbath.

Read Matthew 24:21-

For then there will be great tribulation

The signs that lead up to the end will not compare to what is going to happen.  The Great Tribulation will have a starting point and it will be when the Anti Christ makes himself known and demands worship of himself.

See Revelation 6-16

There has not been an event in history that has described this  and that is why they were told to flee.

Daniel 12:1 At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.

This does not mean that Gods people will not suffer but it does mean God will bring His people through. Going back to the book of Exodus the people were protected but still suffered because of what was going on around them. So although the plaques were for the people of Egypt and pharaoh, the people of God still had discomfort because they still lived in Egypt as well.

This also does not mean that some will not die. If everyone died then there would be no one to be around during the final call of God when He comes to get His children.

And if those days had not been shortened no one would be saved

Some believe that this means God knows the evil taking place and will only allow it to go on for so long.  Of course God in His word has already stated the length of it so the length is set. But others think it means that God will literally shortened the days to help people hide. (Revelation 6:12-14) Taking Those days to mean a 24 hour period. The darkness will allow the people of God to move around at night to get food and to continue to run away.

Revelation 8:12 The fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of their light might be darkened, and a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.

For the sake of the elect

Elect can mean the Israel (Isaiah 45:4) or those who have given their lives to Christ (Revelation 17:14) but it always means those who truly belong to God.

Read Matthew 24:23-27

If anyone says to you, “Look here is the Messiah” do not believe them

The people of God will be longing for the Messiah to come and so some of them will be tricked into thinking He is back. They will think Jesus has come back because of the signs and wonders the false prophets will be able to perform.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

These signs will be so great that even Gods children have to be careful to not allow them to deceive them.  Again we will only know the truth as we compare to Gods word. Jesus children will recognize His voice (John 10:27-28)  Just like sheep run from a strangers voice the true children of God will  know the difference between the true Christ and the antichrist  and run away.

Look He is in the desert or in the inner rooms

Jesus is warning those who will go through this time to not be deceived by the rumors. Satan does not have an original idea but he does take what God has done and makes things seem similar. Do not go to the desert where John the Baptist had his ministry. Do not go to the inner room where Jesus met His disciples after His resurrection.

The false prophets always imitate what Christ has done to deceive others. A false prophets teaching always sounds similar to Christ teachings. This could be a trap that will be set for Christians to lure them out of their hiding places for the anti- Christ to kill them.

Just like lightning comes from the east and is visible to the west

Jesus is making it clear that when He shows up, everyone will know it.  Anyone that claims to be God we do not even have to bother to check out because Jesus will make it clear enough for us all to know.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail[a] on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Those that are on the earth that are Christians will experience and awesome event. For those who are not Christians it will be a dreadful day (Revelation 6:15-16)

Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures gather

This can have several meanings but in light of what Jesus just said it makes sense that He was meaning that the sign is clear. It can also be reference to when Jesus shows up the death and destruction will be so bad that vultures will be seen everywhere.

Closing

  • We are always to live in anticipation of Christ return
  • We are always to make sure we are discerning the times and those who are preaching Gods word.
  • We have to be about the Lords work and not get bogged down with things that do not matter.
  • As the times draw to and end we will see less and less people committed to Christ and only committed to themselves.
  • Selfishness will be at an all time high and that is why we are called to Go, Love and Share about Jesus.
