Daniel 11:36 –45 Spirit of the Anti-Christ

In the book of Daniel there is some debate as to who these verses are written about. Some believe they are written about Antiochus but many believe that the story switches to the person we know as the Anti-Christ. There are many issues that have to be addressed if you believe these verses are talking about King Antiochus and I believe those who think these verses address the Anti-Christ.

From verse 35-36 there is a change in the story line as God goes from things that will happen 200 years in the future to revealing to Daniel what will take place at the end of the world. Daniel described this person in Daniel chapters seven and nine and so the readers would have understood the transition in this chapter. In Daniel chapter seven the anti-Christ is known as the” little horn” who would raise up above the others forming a ten leader rule of the world. (See previous post for more information)

Anti-Christ one who denies or opposes Christ; specifically :  a great antagonist expected to fill the world with wickedness but to be conquered forever by Christ at his second coming (Meriam Webster Dictionary)

Although the anti-Christ will be a specific person when the end of time comes there has already been anti-Christ in the world according to God’s word.

1 John 4:1-3  Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already

According to First John chapter four there are competing spirits in the world and we have to discern which one is from God or the one which is the Anti-Christ. We will look at attributes of the Anti-Christ and see that we cannot be fooled into believing some of the lies that are being taught and we need to check to make sure that we have not listened to the wrong spirit.

Read Daniel 11:36

1)   The Anti-Christ will be his own god?

He will do as he wills (vs 36)

The question that every person must answer is; “Who will be God of my life? “

The first spirit that you can be lead away with is the one that says you are the master of your own destiny. From the beginning there has always been a battle as to who will be God and Adam and Eve were tempted to be like God in the garden. (Genesis 3:5)  Many will say that they do not believe in a god or that religion is worthless but without realizing that they are worshiping a god and the god is themselves. The Anti-Christ will portray himself to be a an atheist but in reality he will replace the true God with himself and demand that people worship him.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness[b] is revealed, the son of destruction,[c] who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

The reason he will be called the “man of lawlessness” is because he will not want to follow any of God’s laws. This is similar to our culture that does not want to live by any rules and especially the laws of God. Our society wants to change the definition of marriage and the definition of gender which goes against the very laws of God. Our society has followed the spirit of the Anti-Christ into being people of lawlessness by demanding their own way and deciding what laws of God they will or will not follow.  The anti- Christ will demand his own way and we live in a culture that does the same and we will only see this become worse the closer to the end times we get.

Most people do not think of themselves as evil people but anyone who sets himself up to be god of their life is just living out the spirit of the anti-Christ. Some people believe in God or a god but it is a god of their making and a god that allows them to not surrender their entire life to him. Just like people who design gods out of wood or stone and worship them we have a tendency to make the true God into something He is not and an idol of our making. To follow Christ goes against our sinful nature of wanting to be in charge and that is why many people follow a Jesus of their making and not the one who said, “Follow Me”. (Matthew 4:19)

Luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

To be a Christ follower means you give up your own rights to your life and die to self. To die to self means that you are not following the spirit of the Anti-Christ this says that you do not have to follow any of God’s laws. This includes those that believe that all roads lead to God and those that believe that they will get into heaven because they are “good people.” The Bible says there is only one way to Heaven (John 14:6) and that no one is good. (Romans 3:10)

Can you accept God’s will for your life or do you try and get God to bless the life you are living?

Do you accept the Word of God for your life or do you just pick out the parts you want to do?

  • Our prayer should always be “Thy will be done” but instead most of us pray “My will be done” as we make a god of our choosing that approves of the lifestyle we live. We do not mind God’s will as long as it goes along with our will but Jesus calls us to surrender our wills and our ways and follow Him even when it is difficult.

Matthew 6:9-10 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven

2)   The Anti-Christ will hate the true God

He shall speak astonishing things against the God of gods. (vs36)

Revelation 13:6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven.

When you reject God’s ways then you will eventually begin to despise God Himself when you realize that He is calling you to give up rule of your life. This progression of being your own god to start hating God is written in Romans chapter one and it shows how people who reject the true God will eventually despise Him.

Romans 1:21; 28-32 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

Maybe you have noticed in the world that there are more and more people who are not saying “live and let live” anymore but are now opposing any mention of God in the public place. These are the people who want religion to be private and they do not want to hear the word “God” or “Jesus” in public. We see this in our own country where people are not satisfied not just ignoring God but then they begin to despise Him and those that worship Him. A rejection of Gods ways will eventually lead you down a path of despising Him because God will not act the way you believe He should. Some people who have been taught the wrong things about God seem to despise Him because He does not do what they think, or were taught, He should do. They were told if they have faith and they “Claim it” that God, like a genie in a bottle, has to answer their request. When they prayed the way they were supposed to pray and their request did not get answered then they begin to hate God. They hate God because they still want to be god and they want the true God to do what they wish or desire and not His will.

You will be hated as a Christians sometimes simply because people do not want to surrender their wills to God and because they despise Him, they will despise you. This pattern is easy to see in our country today as people are becoming increasingly hostile toward the things of God and the people of God.

Read Daniel 11:37-39

3)   The Anti-Christ will seek control over others

He will honor the god of fortress (military power) (vs 38)

When you reject the true God that deserves our worship then you will find a substitute to replace Him with. The Anti-Christ will use military power as his god and he will seek to dominate the world through the god of war. His desire for control over his life will not be satisfied unless he has control over others as well. When you are your own god then you want things to go your way and the anti-Christ will use power and manipulation to achieve what he desires.

“Those who acknowledge him he will load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many.”

The anti-Christ, the ultimate narcissist, will demand that it be all about him and he will reward those who do as he wishes and destroy those who don’t.

Revelation 13:4 And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”

When people who are following the spirit of the Anti-Christ try and control you watch what happens when you stand up to them and not do what they desire. The Anti-Christ punishes those who do not do his will and people who are following the spirit of the Anti-Christ will do the same to you. When you are your own god then your happiness and contentment is based on the actions of others that are in your life. The spirit of the Anti-Christ can drive you to control and manipulate others because you believe that it will make your life more fulfilled if everyone does as you wished. The problem with mankind and the anti-Christ is that we are not as smart as God who is All-Knowing. What we believe will bring happiness usually brings more emptiness because we are trying to fill our lives with the things of this world instead of allowing God to fill us with His Spirit.

We talked about control freaks when we talked about King Nebuchadnezzar but part of being a Christ follower is to trust God with your life and give control of it to Him. This world will never satisfy what a relationship with God can through Jesus Christ. James wrote about problems in the church because people were looking to other people instead of to God.

James 4:1-3 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions[a] are at war within you?[b] You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions

Daniel 11:40-45 are about the wars the Anti-Christ will start and most agree that these verses describe the Battle of Armageddon. ( Ezekiel 38-39; Revelation 9:13-21;16:12-16;19; Joel 3:1-2, 12-14; Zechariah 14:1-3) The Battle will begin when the King of the south (Egypt) and the King of the North (Syria) attack Jerusalem and while he is fighting them Russia, Iran and other allies will attack Jerusalem which the Anti-Christ will be protecting. In Daniel 9:27 we learned that the anti-Christ will make a covenant with Israel and be the protector of Israel and any attack on Israel is an attack on the anti-Christ.  Russia and Iran will be supernaturally destroyed and the Bible tells us it will take Israel  seven months to bury all of the bodies. Some believe the anti-Christ will say he destroyed them supernaturally and then break his covenant with Israel and set himself up to be god in the Jerusalem temple. This would begin the great tribulation that takes place for 3 ½ years and this war will be the one that Jesus returns and begins His reign on earth.

Read Daniel 11:45

4) The Anti-Christ will be punished

He shall come to his end with none to help him.(vs45)

Revelation 19:20  And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence[e] had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.

When Jesus returns to earth as He promised He will come to judge those who decided to follow the Anti-Christ. Eventually we will all stand before God and depending on if we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we will be pardoned or punished. The Good News is that Jesus took our punishment for us and if we accept Jesus Christ our punishment (atonement) will be paid by Him.

The things of this earth will one day pass away and everyone has to do something with the person of Jesus Christ. God will punish evil and He will punish those who decided to not follow Jesus Christ. Everything that has been written about in the Bible will happen and the fulfillment of former prophecies is our proof that God’s Word does not lie. When will these things happen we are not told but we if we are the generation that will have to endure them then we will know that God has everything under control and He will be with us till the end.

Psalm 20:7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Where are you placing your trust? Are you your own god and you do as you want? Then you are following the Spirit of the Anti-Christ. Do you despise God and His laws? Then you are following the Spirit of the Anti-Christ. Are you trying to control your life and also the lives of others? Then you are following the Spirit of the Anti-Christ. Have you accepted the free gift of salvation offered through Jesus Christ? If not you are following the Spirit of the Anti-Christ.

Even as believers we have to test the spirits to make sure we are not following the wrong spirit but God has told us that His Spirit will guide us in all truth. (John 16:13)
