Daniel 12:1-2 The Books

Daniel was just informed about the Anti-Christ and now he is still being told some of the things concerning the future of Israel and the end times.

Read Daniel 12:1 -2

“At that time”, is a reference to the battle of Armageddon that was mentioned in Daniel 11:36-45. The angel Michael is specifically assigned to Israel’s wellbeing and is always assigned the task of protecting and caring for them and the end times mentions the angel Michael’s war with Satan.

Revelation 12:7-9 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him

A spiritual war will be taking place in Heaven that will involve the Angel Michael banning Satan from Heaven once and for all. The book of Job shows us that Satan still had access to go into Heaven and there is no indication that he still does not have access today. Some disagree with this but I believe the verse in Revelation is when Satan will have no more access to Heaven. Because of that Satan will unleash his anger on Israel which is described as a time of trouble or time of distress that has never been experienced in the history of the world.  When that takes place Satan will then enter and empower the Anti-Christ giving him special powers (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12; Revelation 13:2) which will deceive many people into following and worshiping him.

Revelation 6-19 tells us that war and famine will kill 25% of the world and one third of the Earths Sea and fresh water will be polluted. This will be Satan’s’ last attempt to destroy Israel and to try and be the ruler he has always wanted to be. (See Also Matthew 24:21; Zechariah 12-14; Jeremiah 30:3-7)

Matthew 24:29-30 Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

According to Zechariah 13:8 only one-third of Israel will survive this great tribulation but those that do will see Jesus when He returns and will repent and believe in Him. Romans 11:26 says that all of Israel will be saved which the only explanation of that verse is when Jesus returns after the tribulation.

Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

Jesus will stand on the Mount of Olives and will rule the earth for a thousand years. (Zechariah 14:4-9; Acts 1:11-12; Revelation 20:1-7) Those who spiritualize the millennial reign of Christ do not think a thousand year reign of Christ will take place on the earth but those who take it literally believe it will take place after the tribulation. At this time God will rid the earth of all the people that did not accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (Matthew 25:31-46) and lock up Satan for a thousand years. (Revelation 20:2-3)  The second coming of Christ is talked about in 23 of the 27 books of the New Testament and Jesus refers to His second coming 20 times.  (For more on the  millennial reign see: Isaiah 2:1-5; 4:1-6; 11:1-9; 12:1-6; 30:18-26; 35:1-10; Luke 22:29-30; 2 Timothy 4:1)

The purpose of the tribulation is so that Gods chosen people will again turn to the one who they have pierced (Crucified) and realize that Jesus was the Messiah the Old Testament scriptures prophesied about.   Daniel is told that people whose name is written in the Book will be delivered and those whose names are not in the book will be cast out.

There are several books the Bible talks about and I think it is important to understand each one of them. Many people have the wrong concept of God and Christianity and so they have a tendency to believe in Universalism (everyone goes to Heaven) or annihilationist (those who do not accept  Christ just stop existing) With those false views we must look at the different books the Bible mentions and what they each mean.

The Book of the Law

The law was given to show us that God is Holy and perfect and we could never attain that perfection.  In America there are so many laws that many people do not know that they are breaking a law. Two laws that get broken without people knowing is the law saying that you cannot connect to an unsecured WIFI which was established by a law concerning the computer fraud and abuse act. And another one is carrying a permanent marker in public which breaks almost every states anti-graffiti law. Although these are funny we know that our country has a ton of laws and I have heard that every citizen in America has broken at least one law that they did not know about. God has given us His book of the Law and He did it so we can know that we have broken His laws as well. Although you may not have known you broke a law you will still be held accountable for it.

Galatians 3:10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”

God is perfect and for us to be able to stand in front of Him we would have to go our entire lives not breaking one of these laws. God wants us to see that we needed Jesus to save us and that we could not do it on our own. (Romans 2)  Jesus perfect life and the fact that He paid our debt for us, allows us to fulfill the book of the law through Him. Your relationship with God is not based on how good or bad you are but if you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. When we accept Jesus death on the cross for us then we are credited with living perfect lives.

Colossians 3:3-4 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (See Also: Romans 3:23; Isaiah 53:5-6; Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Corinthians 5:21)

The Book of Life

“Everyone whose name shall be found written in the Book”

The book is also called the book of life (Revelation 3:5) or the book of remembrance (Malachi 3:16) and it is where all the saints have their names written. It was symbolic to how they kept the names of all the citizens in a town and documented to know that they are citizens of that town. One day our names will be looked for in the book to see if we are citizens of heaven.

Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, (See Also Exodus 32:33; Psalm 69:28; Malachi 3:16; Hebrews 12:23; Revelation 3:5; 20:12)

“Many of those who sleep will awake”

Sleep is a figure of speech for those who have passed away.  (John 11:11-14; Acts 7:60; 1 Thessalonians 4:13; 1 Corinthians 15:51-55) Sleep is used because just like when we go to sleep we awake so our bodies will be awoken during the resurrection. Most of us do not fear falling asleep and we look forward to it and Christians should not fear death because we know our rest will lead us to a better life.  This does not mean that you are in a state of unconsciousness or as some call soul sleep because 2 Corinthians 5:8 tells us that for those who are believers to be away from the body is to be present with the Lord. (Philippians 1:21-23) In Luke 16:19-31 Jesus told a story showing the difference between two people who stepped into eternity. One went to Abraham side and the other went into torment (Hades). Jesus was showing us that when we leave this earth we will live for eternity in a conscience state in Heaven or in Hell.

John 5:28-29 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

The phrase “those who have done good” does not mean you can earn your way to Heaven but it means that you have been made good by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  Job, the psalmist and the prophets looked forward to a bodily resurrection. (Job 19:25-27; Psalms 17:15; 49:15; 71:20; Isaiah 25:7; Hosea 13:14) 1 Corinthians 15 talks about the resurrection we are assured of because of Jesus being resurrected. It even discusses what kinds of bodies we will have which will be glorious bodies.

“Some to everlasting life”

Luke 10:20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Jesus wanted his disciples to know that there was something bigger to be excited about than casting out demons and that is that their names were written in the book that guaranteed their entrance into Heaven. How many times do I think about what I do not have and forget that my name is written in the book of life?  We have been given eternal life with God through Jesus Christ and we need to make sure we remember how precious a gift that is.

The Books of Judgement

“Some to everlasting shame “

The books of Judgement will be all the things that are written down that are done by those who do not accept Jesus Christ for salvation. They also will be brought back from the dead but their resurrection will happen after the thousand year reign of Christ (Revelation 20:4-6) The wicked will be ashamed when they stand before God and they realize their wickedness and that they rejected the free gift of salvation.

Revelation 20:12-15  And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Everyone will give an account before God but we can choose to try and earn our own way which is stored in some books or we can accept Jesus payment and have our names written in the book of life. If we try and earn it on our own then we will give an account for every word, every secret and every deed we have done.

Every Word

Matthew 12:36-37  I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

They say Women speak 20,000-25,000 words a day and that Men speak 7,000-10,000 words a day. Think about in your daily life how many words you say and how many of them are careless or inappropriate. All of us have been guilty of saying things we wish we would not have said and unfortunately for those who are not in Christ they will be held accountable for every single one of them.

Books will be opened that will have a person without Christ every word spoken and they will be judged by them.

Every Secret

Romans 2:16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus

If you think being judged by every secret is bad enough it gets worse because those without Christ will be judged by every thought that they had. There will be books that will have written in them every thought whether good and bad and on that day they will be revisited.  Paul was talking to them about judgment and those who do not accept Christ will be held accountable to the entire law even the things no one else knew about.

Every Deed

Romans 2:5-8 But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking[a] and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury

Those who had more knowledge about God will be judged by a harsher standard than those who did not get the full access to the truth. (Matt. 11:21-24) God will be fair but none the less He will judge the deeds whether good or bad. Jesus said in Matthew 10:28 to fear the one who can destroy both the soul and the body in Hell. No one will be able to be good enough on their own and they will be eternally separated from God.   (See also Matthew 16:27)

Accepting Jesus Christ is like a passport back into your country of birth. You have the right to be there because you are a citizen. (Philippians 3:20) Christians will be accepted into the presence of God only if they have received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. If today was your last day on earth would you know that you are going to be raised to everlasting life?

“The amount of your sin is not a barrier; it is our unbelief that cuts us off from God’s mercy and pardon.” (One Minute After You Die, Erwin Lutzer, Pg 180)

It is not how much or how little you sin but only if you allow Jesus Christ be the reason that you are accepted into Heaven. The thing you need to know for sure before you die is if your name in the book.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
