Amos 5:26-27 Bring Your Own Jesus

Amos more than likely interrupted their worship service at Bethel which was known for its corrupt worship which involved other gods. The problem with the corrupt worship is that the priests were not correcting anyone on how to worship God and so God called Amos to go and warn them of His wrath that was coming.

Amos 5:26-27  You shall take up Sikkuth your king, and Kiyyun your star-god—your images that you made for yourselves, 27 and I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts.

The Jesus we make versus the Jesus revealed

Although the people worshiped God they also put their hope in other gods and some of the gods they worshiped and prayed to were stars. These people were enthusiastic in their worship but misguided in their the things of God. Because they worshiped other gods they will be sent into Exile and 2 Kings 17:23-24 says that it took place 40 years after Amos prophecy.

We may think that it is strange to actually have idols on shelves that we worship but in foreign countries (growing in U.S.) people set up shrines in their homes. MS 13 gang members have been reported as setting up shrines to gods they burn cigarettes to. Your Idols are the things you look to for protection, provision or peace. Some put their hope in money, some in popularity and some into politics.

Although the gods you allow into your worship are not made from wood or stone the reality is we make Jesus into something that He is not. The people of Amos day were making God in their own image and worshiping Him how they saw fit and our society makes Jesus, who is God, into their own image. Every religion has something to say about Jesus Christ and the differences in all the religions of the world are what they say about Jesus Christ. American Christianity has made Jesus into a health wealth gospel that twist the good news of what Jesus did on the cross to be about how He will help you have your best life now. John Macarthur said, “the only way this could be your best life now is if you are going to hell”

When we do not see what was revealed about Jesus in the scriptures we tend to make a Jesus that fits our way of thinking but Jesus turned their thinking upside down even though O.T. scriptures said what would happen.

John 10:7-11 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Every other religion and every other object of worship will kill and destroy you but only Jesus gives the life that you are looking for. The problem is “Sin is no longer the enemy of mankind, sadness is.” Erwin Lutzer. To FEEL good is the number one priority so we have exchanged religious views to make us feel better because we no longer need to be rescued from our sin but we need to be made happy. The Jesus who has been revealed has come to save us from sin and put us back into a right relationship with God. The reason that people do not seek a savior is because they do not believe they need to be saved. Like a hunter in the woods who is lost and becomes found only to reject the rescuers attempt to show him the way out many people reject the offer of Christ salvation because they do not believe they need it.

Jesus is one of the options versus Jesus as the only way.

We are hearing the same thing in our culture as you will hear people say “It doesn’t matter what god you pray to because every deity is ultimately the same deity just with a different name” Most Americans believe that many religions can lead to eternal life.

43% of Americans say “It doesn’t matter what religious faith you follow because they all teach the same lessons.”  59% of Americans believe that Christians and Muslims worship the same God even though they have different names and beliefs regarding God

It is one thing for Americans to be confused about Jesus but many people who identify as Christians are confused as well.   57% of Protestant Christians believe that there are many ways to heaven.  40% of Christians believe that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. (Stats are from 2007-2008 Pew Research Center)

Some people believe that God will eventually accept everyone into Heaven which is called universalism either because God does not reject anyone or because when Christ died on the cross that everyone was saved no matter if they reject Him or not while on earth. We are also told that what is true for you may not be true for me but the reality is truth is true for all people no matter if they like the truth or not. Two plus two will always equal four so truth is truth for all people, for all places for all times.  If Christianity is not true then it is not true for anyone but if it is true then it is true for everyone as well. We are beginning to see something called Chrislam which is an attempt to bring together Christianity and Islam because people say they are compatible even though Muslims do not accept Jesus as God or that He died on the cross for our sins which if Christ did not die and rise again then Christianity is worthless. (1 Corinthians 15“Take a superficial look at Christ and other gods and you might think there are some impressive similarities. Take a closer look and you will discover they are separated by and unbridgeable chasm.” (Christ among other gods, Erwin Lutzer, PG. 30)

Many people teach that Jesus may still be unique but He does not hold all the truth only  one set of truths .The people of Amos day, just like in America, were mixing their worship with God with other religions and God rejected it outright. Because we have become entertainment oriented in our churches instead of theologically trained many church going people do not know the difference between Christianity and other religions and the pressure will rise for us to join together with other religions in the name of unity and peace.

2 Corinthians 11:3-4; 13-15 But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

The Bible warns us as the end times approach us that deception will increase and we need to be ready by knowing the truth of God’s word. False notions about Jesus can make us miss the importance of who He is and why He came down to die on the cross for us.

Philippians 2:5-11 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[a] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,[b] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,[c] being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus was God in human form who lived a sinless life and died for our sins.  (Matthew 20:28; 26:26-28)

Acts 4:11-12 This Jesus[a] is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b] 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men[c] by which we must be saved.”

Christianity teaches that no other name leads to God but Jesus and all roads do not lead to God. We cannot just believe any Jesus we have to believe in the one who has been revealed. If you ask people if they love Jesus the answer might be yes but what Jesus are they saying yes to? Jesus warned us that in the last days there would be false Christ. (Matthew 24:23-24) it maybe not so much a person as it is a false Idea of Jesus.

Do you know the real Jesus or the one whom you like?  Have you accepted by faith the Jesus who came to earth, lived a sinless life, died for your sins, rose again and ascended to Heaven? The people in Amos day were mixing religions and they saw nothing wrong with it and there are many church going people in America who see no problem with it as well.
